CHAPTER 18

LEXIE

“Mom.” Jack runs to me as soon as I get home. I give him a huge hug and kiss him all over his tiny cheeks quickly until he giggles. Then I lay my cheek on his head and take a deep breath. Breathing him in, I smell the clean scent of his tear-free shampoo. I close my eyes. He's growing up too fast. I don't want to forget him at this age, or any age for that matter.

“You washed your hair by yourself?”

“Uh-huh.” He gives me another squeeze before he runs off to play with his trucks in the living room.

Leaving him to work is never easy, but it's a reality when there are bills to pay. Secretly, I hope Luc buys Jack skates—it will save me hundreds of dollars. I need to have cash for the trip because I don't want him to think I expect him to pay for everything. I'm not sure what he has planned, but knowing how he loves adventure, he probably has a list of things to do with Jack.

Jack spent the morning at pre-K, and Jim made sure he showered for me. He's dressed in his pajamas and ready to watch his father play ice hockey on TV. Luc has been texting me with questions on colors for his room, and what's my favorite color of all things.

“Why?” I asked when we spoke on the phone late last night.

“I need to know. You're the mother of my child. It's not an unreasonable request, is it?”

“I guess not. Blue. I love blue.”

“See, there you go.”

“I have a question for you.”

“Shoot.”

“Have you dated other women? Of course, you have, but was there anyone serious?”

“I tried, but no one came close to you.”

I about choked on my own saliva. I made a few swallows, and it made me cough. I pretended my throat was ticklish due to allergies.

“Allergies in winter, really?”

“Who knows, is allergy season ever over?”

“I have no clue,” he replies.

“What about you?”

“I was single for a long time. Then, I realized you were never going to come for us, and I started dating.”

“Michael?”

“Yes, he's the only one that was serious. He's a realtor.”

“When is your wedding?”

“In summer, I suppose. I mean, who wants to get married in winter? It's not all that pretty.”

“That's true. Besides, most hockey players get married in the summer. I assume it's popular, right up there with Valentine's Day.”

“I never thought of that.” God, I hope Michael won't rush me. “So, do you go home to your family in the summer?”

“Yes, I do. I love it there. Jack will love it, too. I told my family about him, so I have to take a bazillion pictures when you get here.”

“I never imagined what it would be like after our initial meeting.”

“You mean you’ve thought of the day we might meet again?”

“I did. Then, I tried not to,” I murmur. Besides, how many times did Mom say he’s never going to come back for the girl who slept with him on the first date?

I was embarrassed to admit that to my parents.
